Trees by Touliatos has everything you need to create your own water garden, or we can design and install a beautiful pond for you. The secret to a clear and healthy water garden is the proper amounts of plants and fish which are used to stock the pool. Trees by Touliatos promote proper stocking of a pond rather than mechanically or chemically cleaning up a problem which could have been prevented.
The formula for clear and healthy water the natural way is:
STOP FEEDING THE FISH! - Fish are opportunistic and will make a living on your pool without fish food! I promise they will not starve! Food can be reintroduced in several months after YOU learn how to balance your pool. Always use natural foods like duckweed and azolla in early spring rather than commercial fish foods (so your fish won't get diarrhea!)
ADD WATER PLANTS (SEE BELOW)
- Add a very small amount of "clear water" vegetable dye and "fish salts" to the pond. (Don't worry, they are fish and plant safe.)
- Relax- Water gardening is fun and your water will clear up in 2 weeks!
- For clear water, you must have 52-62% of the surface pond covered with some type of water plant and limit the quantity of fish in the pool.
For every 25 square feet of water surface you need:
- 1- Hardy Waterlily or Hardy Lotus (Tropical Waterlilies may also be used).
- 4- Marginal (shallow water) plants (hardy or tropical).
- 3- Clumps of oxygenating plants.
- 1- Portion of duckweed or azolla (often disappears/the fish eat it).
- 2- Clumps of water hyacinth.(not winter hardy)
- 2- Clumps of water lettuce (not winter hardy)
- 1- foot of fish (This can be 1-12", or 2-6", or 4-3" fish, etc.)
Don't forget to feed your waterlillies with time-release fertilizer pills for extra blooms! Marginal plants can be fed but don't require it for good growth. Our "natural balance" is easy to achieve and requires no more than following our simple formula and in less than 2 weeks your water will be clear! All this is achieved without the aid of chemicals, vacuums, filters, aerators, and other gimmicks.
